Biography

Early life and education

Fulvio Caldini was born on 1959 December 19 in Arezzo (Italy); studied piano with Giorgio Sacchetti at the Conservatory of Music in Florence and graduated in 1982. Then he studied chamber music with Franco Rossi of the “Quartetto Italiano” and John Blakely at King Alfred’s College in Winchester, harmony and counterpoint with Franco Cioci, harpsichord with Anna Maria Pernafelli and organ with Fausto D’antimi.

Composer

In 1988, as a composer, won the 1st prize at the “Ennio Porrino” competition in Cagliari with a piece for flute solo; in 1992 was awarded at the competition of the “Italian Society of Recorder” in Rome with “Fade-Control op.47/C” for 4 recorders.

His compositions are published by Curci Edition (Italy), Moeck (Germany), Valhall Edition (Germany), Emerson Edition (England), and Tre Fontane Edition (Germany).

In 1994 he translated Steve Reich’s book, “Writings about music”, in collaboration fo the edition of the book “Steve Reich” printed by E.D.T. in Turin. He also wrote some articles and abstracts for italian music quarterlies.

In 1994 he recorded a CD for the Ariston label, with some of his compositions. In 2009 the Channel Classics label issued a CD totally devoted to his works featuring Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet.

Moreover, he collaborated with Breitkopf & Hartel, and Doblinger as editor with some piano reductions from orchestra and basso continuo realizations.

In September 2023 was released a mono-graphic CD with pieces for Recorder and Piano, performed respectively by Hidehiro Nakamura and Naruhiko Kawaguchi. The CD is published with DaVinci Classics.

In recent years he composed also for organ, in collaboration with organist and composer Carson Cooman. In early 2024 they collaborated on an album of organ music, released on all major streaming platforms.

Performer

In 1984 he won the 2nd prize for piano contemporary music at the international competition in Stresa. In 1985 he won the 1st prize for chamber music at the same competition. He played with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra della Toscana (1987 to 1995), Contempoartensemble, Nextime Ensemble, and several baroque ensembles. He has also been active as a soloist in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

In 2002 he recorded a CD for the Arts label with Contempoartensemble and Nextime Ensemble with some compositions of Steve Reich.

More recently he performed in various locations around Florence with pieces from the Baroque period (harpsichord or organ, voice, and oboe) and chamber art songs for voice and piano.

Teacher

He taught at "Liceo musicale" in Arezzo, Conservatory of Cosenza, Vibo Valentia, Modena, Milan. Now he is a chamber music teacher at the Conservatory of Music in Florence.
